Bicycle Fatalities Spike in 2011 as More Commuters Hit the Roads
The state of Florida can proudly boast that is has a large population of bike commuters. Unfortunately, despite decreasing traffic congestion and lowering pollution, too many bikers are often involved in dangerous auto accidents. Since 2006, the number of bike accident fatalities has steadily decreased, however a spike was reported in 2011.
A recent example involves a hit and run accident in Pasco County, Florida. It occurred at two in the morning, and visibility was likely a factor. It is also speculated the bicyclist was attempting to cross the road, potentially putting him in front of oncoming traffic.
Luckily, local governments are implementing measures to increase safety for cyclists. Such initiatives include implementing bike lanes and requiring future projects to include bike lanes in their development plans.
In addition to government involvement, bike advocates are calling for both drivers and bikers to take proactive steps in ensuring safety.
Proactive Tips for Drivers and Bicyclists
Bike commuting advocates note common trends in accidents involving automobiles. They most commonly involve:
- Time of day: more often occur at night when visibility a factor
- Location: most often occur in intersection
Knowledge of these trends allows both drivers and bicyclists to be extra cautious in these situations. Measures to decrease fatalities can include use of reflective devices and lights for bicycles to increase visibility and extra awareness for motorists.
National Institute of Health Study Calls for Increased Safety at Intersections
A study by the National Institute of Health found the occurrence of crashes was directly related to the characteristics of the bike lane. Recommended prevention efforts focused on the use of bicycle boxes at intersections to further reduce accidents.
Bike boxes are designed to increase bike visibility at intersections by requiring bikers to stop in a green colored box. Use of the box resulted in decreased encroachment of motor vehicles at intersections.
Remedies Available
Although implementation of such measures will help put an end to the recent fatality spike, accidents will still happen. Both bikers and automobile drivers and passengers injured in an auto accident may be entitled to compensation for medical and rehabilitative expenses. Consulting with an experienced attorney is advised.
