Pedestrian Killed in Car Accident on Boca Raton Road
The fatal auto accident occurred a short time after 3:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The male victim, who has yet to be identified, was walking on the right side of Southwest 18th Street, which is located near Military Trail in Boca Raton, FL. The victim was moving across the roadway’s right turn lane and the right through lane as a motor vehicle traveling westbound on the street began to move into the right turn lane.
The driver of the vehicle, a 29-year-old Boca Raton resident, struck the victim. The motorist later told law enforcement officials that the victim made a sudden movement in front of the car and that there was no way to anticipate the action or stop the car prior to impact.
An official police report indicated that the driver attempted to swerve to the left of the road prior to impact. As a result, the pedestrian was struck by the right front corner of the automobile. The pedestrian then slammed into the windshield, with the force of impact further throwing the victim off the top of the car and onto the ground.
The motorist brought the vehicle to a stop and dialed 911 to alert local police. Emergency medical responders subsequently rushed to the scene of the pedestrian accident, but they were unable to save the victim’s life. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy, but it is fully expected that coroners will determine that the victim’s cause of death was catastrophic injuries sustained in the motor vehicle accident.
The Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office (PBSO) is currently investigating the fatal crash and attempting to determine exactly what happened in the moments before the accident. At this time, the driver has not been cited for any traffic violations, nor has he been criminally charged with manslaughter or any other crime in connection with the crash.
